Each year more children under the age of five lose their lives to pneumonia than measles, malaria and AIDS combined. Pneumonia is a preventable and easily treatable
disease, yet in poor countries it is a major killer of young children. In efforts to alleviate these deaths, global health organizations worldwide are uniting in order to urge governments to take the necessary initiative to fight pneumonia. The highly-acclaimed NGO (non-governmental organization), Save the Children spearheaded the first international coalition of major health and human rights organizations, corporations and faith-based groups holding the first World Pneumonia Day symposium to combat childhood pneumonia in New York City on November 2, 2009.

Save the Children, the foremost international health and social awareness organization creating lasting change for children around the world, facilitates health programs to treat pneumonia in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Dominican republic, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Pakistan, southern Sudan and Zambia, as well as supporting pneumonia programs in numerous more countries. Players learn how the organization trains and equips local village volunteers as health workers to assist villagers in their fight against pneumonia.
Taking health quizzes in Mission Pneumonia educates players through the game’s 7-level health quizzes by testing your knowledge about pneumonia. As you advance through the quiz’s levels, familiarizing yourself about 7 individual family’s experiences with children affected by pneumonia, players are encouraged to take simple actions to support combative pneumonia efforts, including undertaking the mission to spread the word about this deadly killer of so many in the developing world. You answer true/false health quiz questions by ‘visiting’ 7 different virtual ‘homes’, learning and appreciating how pneumonia impacts the health of the children who inhabit these homes and their families. Players ‘visit’ family homes in areas for example, such as: a remote rural community in the central highlands of Guatemala, and the remote farming community of
Cacao Minitas high in the northern mountains of Nicaragua.

Throughout the health quiz, you learn about: the effectiveness of pneumonia targeted vaccines; how those with HIV are more susceptible to the disease because of their weakened immune systems; the effect of zinc in pneumonia prevention; the importance of good nutrition; controlling indoor air pollution; the importance of access to trained health care workers and their use of chest X-rays, lab tests, and breath-counting techniques.

The health quiz stresses the importance of reducing childhood pneumonia deaths in achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 – Reducing Child Mortality.
